Camp Alma Story

Camp Alma is located in a rural setting where veterans will be provided integrative services for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and co-morbidities related to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as therapeutic skills so they can heal while learning skills and self-sufficiency.

Previously operating as the Lane County Sheriff Inmate Work Camp until 2008, Veterans Legacy procured the county property in 2016 to begin rehabilitation of the property. The camp was deeded to VLO in November of 2018 with an official dedication. Located on 110 acres. The property includes an administration building with a working industrial kitchen, dorms, shops and farming and agricultural infrastructure. Veterans Legacy board members, numerous corporate and individual donors and dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly over the past five years to rehabilitate Camp Alma as a safe haven for veterans.

Rehab work has included new water and HVAC systems, reinstallation of commercial kitchen equipment and walk-in freezer, new dorm beds and furniture, compliance testing of fire suppression systems, roof repair, building repairs, cleaning of facilities, greenhouse restructuring and an abundance of property upkeep — all by the generous, dedicated and hard-working supporters of Veterans Legacy Oregon.

The surrounding land of Camp Alma will be utilized for farming, including greenhouse and field cropping, to attain self-sufficiency in food production for the facility, as well as contributing to community food resources, such as Food For Lane County. Active involvement in forestry projects, such as forest fire mitigation, is anticipated as yet another opportunity in which clients may provide community service. These endeavours will combine to provide a general therapeutic framework which will encourage focus on treatment interventions, reestablish self-esteem, aid in reintegration, and ideally, aid in acquiring employment when on site care is completed for each veteran.
